The Image You Save Is Not the Image Pinterest Has
When you right-click a Pinterest image and choose Save, you usually get whatever version the page happened to display, often 236 or 564 pixels wide. Pinterest stores several sizes of every upload, and the original is frequently four to eight times larger than the one you just saved.
That difference matters the moment you print the image, use it in a design, or crop into it. This guide covers how to reach the largest version Pinterest actually holds.
Understanding Pinterest Image Sizes
Every uploaded image is stored at several widths on Pinterest image servers. The page loads a size appropriate for your screen, which is why a phone and a desktop can show visibly different quality for the same pin.
The sizes you will typically encounter are:
- Thumbnail widths used in feeds and grids, far too small to reuse
- Medium widths which is what most right-click saves capture
- Original, the full upload, limited only by what the creator provided
One important caveat: no method can exceed the original upload. If someone pinned a small image to begin with, the largest available version is still small. Nothing recovers detail that was never there.
Method 1: Use a Downloader Tool
The simplest approach is to paste the pin URL into a downloader, which requests the largest stored version directly rather than the one your screen received.
- Open the pin so the image fills the screen
- Tap or click Share, then Copy Link
- Paste the link into the tool and start the download
- Pick the largest size offered
This works the same on phones and desktops, which is its main advantage. The manual methods below are awkward on mobile.
Method 2: Open the Image in Its Own Tab
On a desktop browser you can reach the image file directly:
- Right-click the image and choose Open image in new tab
- Look at the URL, which contains a size segment near the start of the path
- Replace that size segment with
originals - Reload the tab, then save the image that appears
If the edited URL returns an error, that original is not available in the same file format. Try the same URL with a .jpg extension instead of .png, or fall back to the largest numbered size that does load.
Method 3: Check the Source Website First
Many pins link back to a blog, shop, or portfolio where the image was published at full quality. Scroll to the bottom of the pin for the source link and visit it. Photographers and retailers in particular publish larger versions on their own sites than the copy circulating on Pinterest.
This method is also the most reliable way to identify who made an image, which matters if you plan to ask permission or credit the creator.
Downloading Images on iPhone
Safari does not offer a straightforward right-click, so the tool method is the practical route.
- Copy the pin link from the Pinterest app
- Open the downloader in Safari and paste it
- Tap Download, then choose Save to Photos or Save to Files
If the image opens in a new tab instead of downloading, press and hold it and choose Add to Photos.
Downloading Images on Android
Chrome on Android lets you long-press an image and choose Download image, but this saves the displayed size, not the original. For full resolution, use the copy-link-and-paste flow instead. Files land in the Downloads folder and usually appear in the gallery within a few minutes.
What About Bulk Downloads?
Saving an entire board image by image is slow, and Pinterest does not offer an export for other people boards. For your own boards, request a data archive from account settings, which includes what you have saved without any third-party tool.
Using Downloaded Images Responsibly
A full-resolution copy is not a licence. Most images on Pinterest belong to the photographer, brand, or artist who made them, and downloading changes nothing about that.
- Generally fine: personal reference, mood boards, private inspiration folders
- Ask first: anything published, sold, or used commercially
- Never: republishing as your own work or removing a watermark
When in doubt, follow the source link and contact whoever published it. Creators grant permission far more often than people expect.
Summary
Right-clicking gives you a preview; the original takes one extra step. Use a downloader for speed on any device, edit the image URL if you prefer doing it manually on desktop, and check the source site when you need the best copy available.
